What is Ubuntu?

Ubuntu is a community-developed operating system based upon a project called Linux. It is a distribution of Linux that focuses on being the most convenient and easy-to-use. A Linux distribution (often called a “distro” for short) is a customization of Linux that also includes other software projects toilored for a specific purpose. Ubuntu is available for a wide range of uses such as:

  • Desktop/Laptops
  • Servers
  • Mobile Internet Devices; like netbooks

An Ubuntu LiveCD is a disc with an installer for Ubuntu that is capable of letting you try Ubuntu before even having it installed. It is configured to not make a single change to your harddrive at all, until you explicitly tell it to by going through the installation wizard. Ubuntu comes with all the needed software to start working right out of the box; and a convenient program to find additional software you want installed that will download, install, and configure all the software for you.
